A DAY IN THE COMPANY OF MY FAVOURITE MONKEE - DAVY JONES

BY KEVIN FINDLAY

Saturday May 6th 2000 was an exciting day for me, I was staying at the Quality Inn Plaza in Orlando, Florida. After breakfast I drove in my rented Chevy to Walt Disney's Epcot Centre, which incidentally stands for Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow, or 'Future World'. The reason for all this excitement was that Davy was doing a booksigning to promote his autobiography, or is that, no wait a minute, it's his ought-to-buy-ography - Daydream Believin'. (If you don't already have a copy of this superb book then it's about time you had one. Make sure you obtain Davy's book on audio tape too, available from Hercules Promotions, as it's fun and great to listen to).

Davy was doing his booksigning between 12-2 pm and 3-5 pm in the Blue Room at American Adventure. (Now some of you may have my video of Davy at Epcot 1999. If so, look when Davy is in the audience signing Brady Bunch Theme, before he sings 'Girl', you will see American Adventure in the background. I arrived at 11am, the time that area of the park opened and was second in line inside.

I expected quite a few people to be there, but due to little or no promotion from Disney, there was only about 25-30 people who turned up. The only way I knew about it was that Davy had mentioned it a few days earlier. Just before 12 noon, Susan Gerald and Debbie Sunseri's sister arrived followed by Davy. Davy signed my copy of his book Daydream Believin' and a few photos and CD covers.

My good friends Kristi and Nancy from Florida and Rosina from Brazil turned up and we chatted for a while. After everyone had their books, pics etc signed by Davy, he signed a few books ordered by some fan clubs. As it was very quiet inside, later Davy decided to set up outside, and attracted a much bigger crowd, as it was not well publicised.

Davy was in great form, talking, telling jokes and stories, posing for photos, and generally enjoying himself with the very large crowds of people of all ages, as the park got very busy. Some people were very surprised to see Davy there, as they didn't know he was to have been there, so a few surprises there.

All in all a superb day in the company of my favourite Monkee Davy Jones. I also had time to interview Davy, and I have included a condensed version of that interview. Enjoy - Kevin Findlay

KEVIN: Hi Davy, great to see you back at Epcot again, and delighted to see you doing a booksigning for "Daydream Believin'". A superb book, I enjoyed reading your first version book "They Made a Monkee Out of Me", from way back in '85.

DAVY: Yeah, great to see you back again Kevin. Yeah, it's always great performing at Epcot or Magic Kingdom. It's so relaxed here and great fun.

KEVIN: Do you remember playing in Edinburgh at the Playhouse in your first ever panto, Peter Pan?

DAVY: Yeah, I do, that was in 1962 with John Gregson and Ann Hayward. Yeah, that was something unbelievable wasn't it?

KEVIN: I liked your picture in your book in Edinburgh with you wearing your kilt. I used to wear a kilt when I was a wee boy.

DAVY: Yeah, I bought the kilt, the sporran, everything. I've still got all that gear.

KEVIN: You've still got that?

DAVY: My kids, all, everyone of them have worn it. It's still alive and kicking somewhere in the family, so that's been so many years ago, it's like ridiculous.

KEVIN: Do you remember when you appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday Feb 9th 1964 - The Beatles were on that same show. I actually have the complete recording of that show in my collection.

DAVY: Oh really - I do have it somewhere. I'm too busy going forward, I can't keep going back. Yeah, a memorable show that one.

KEVIN: Any plans to release another "Just for the Record"?

DAVY: We have another 5 CD collection of new tunes. Well actually all brand new tunes that I wrote, well I pulled a couple off of "Just for the Record 4". But the rest are brand new, I've also recorded 12 brand new songs for a new album.

KEVIN: I'd love you to put the song "Who Was It?" - the B Side on "You're a Lady", into your shows.

DAVY: Oh, the Japanese one you mean. "Who Was It?" - yeah, that's a Gilbert O'Sullivan tune.

KEVIN: That's a classic, a great song. I love that track, it's one of my favourites (I sing a little of the song).

DAVY: Davy laughs Yeah, I like that tune too. You know, it's so difficult to get the guys to do new material, and obviously people want to hear the Monkees stuff, hits, well, where do you do with that. I guess if it's happy, alright, then it works.

KEVIN: Do you have fond memories of doing "The Point" at the Mermaid Theatre in London, back in '77/'78?

DAVY: Yes, we talked about doing "The Point" as a concert actually. You know, Davy sings Nilsson, just doing The Point. Yeah, that would be quite fun, but no particular schedule on that at all. But we're talking about doing it, just all Nilsson tunes.

KEVIN: Do you get a chance to see your favourite football team Manchester United play?

DAVY: I do once or twice, but not often.

KEVIN: Do you know Alex Ferguson the Manager?

DAVY: Yeah.

KEVIN: He was the Manager of Aberdeen Football Club back in the 80's, a very successful Manager, did really well, and has done magnificently with Man U.

DAVY: Yeah, they're a winning team Man U.

KEVIN: Yeah, they are Premier League Champions this year, 12 points ahead at the top.

DAVY: Well great, that's my team. I saw them play … who did they play? They played "Real Madrid". a couple of months ago. I watched that game, they won 3-2.

KEVIN: Yeah, that was a terrific game, very entertaining.

Do you get back to visit your sisters?

DAVY: Well once in a while, not often, not as often as I would like to.

KEVIN: OK Davy, well I hope your book sells well.

DAVY: We're doing alright, we're doing a couple of signings and we have a radio station back up and all that stuff. Hopefully that will work out.

KEVIN: Well I hope you come back to Epcot next year.

DAVY: Well we will see, it's been fun.

KEVIN: Ok Davy, thanks - nice to talk to you.

DAVY: Yeah, nice talking to you too Kevin. Ok, have fun in the park. Bye Kevin.

KEVIN: Bye Davy.
