MONKEE MADNESS - DAVY AND MICKY 2002

Well it was a long time in coming but it finally happened. Davy and Micky on tour in the UK 2002.

The excitement for me happened in Feb when I did an interview for the Sunday Post about my obsession of 35 years of Monkee Madness, my way to promote the tour a little, as the promoters didn't seem to be interested in promoting Davy and Micky at all.

The shows kicked off in Glasgow, on a rainy eve, with "Murmurs of Irma". Davy's daughter Jessica and Davy managed the group, the drummer was Jessica's cousin. I grew to like their music after a while, sounds like "I love my lava lamp" and "Coloured Ice", great songs, a 60's/70's progressive type band. Davy and Jessica and Annabel could be seen by the side of the stage when they performed ….

Next came all the excitement, as Dave Alexander introduced the guys as the stars of the Monkees Davy and Micky. The band is Davy's band, that play in the US and have been with him for several years.

Opening up with "Clarksville", both guys dressed in leather pants and shirts. Songs like "Look Out", "Girl I Knew Somewhere", followed.

The first night did have its sound problems, but all shows were superb. Davy performed the Oliver medley and "Girl" in Glasgow only, then dropped them after bad press reports the following day. Micky was in superb form with "Alternate Title", "Since I Fell for You" and "Goin' Down". Davy and Micky work so well together, some great gags and one liners, some we had heard before.

I enjoyed the Porpoise Song/Listen to the Band versions and it was great to hear Davy perform "Manchester Boy" in Glasgow and Manchester only, it was great meeting up with all Monkee fans at the shows; especially Carol, Barbara, Lynne, Sue from Manchester and Kirk and Marcus. I was a little disappointed at the merchandise on offer. I only bought the Live in Toronto CD, which was excellent, disappointed that there wasn't a new UK Tour program with Davy and Micky, just the USA 2001 program.

After the Glasgow show was over I went backstage to meet Davy and Micky. Micky signed my program from "The Point", Davy also, and Micky signed my book " I'm A Believer, My Life of Monkees, Music and Madness", a book Micky put out back in '83. Micky was surprised when I showed him my program from "The Point" and said that he hadn't seen a copy of that for years. David Fishoff took our photo together, then looked through "The Point" program.

Davy introduced me to his daughter Jessica and said "This is Kevin, he's been to Epcot loads of times." It was great seeing Davy again, I last met him in Florida in 2000, he signed a few items for me including the cover of the "JUST ME" CD.

I presented Micky and Davy with a bottle of malt scotch whisky to welcome them to Scotland and the start of the UK tour. I told Jessica the first time I saw her was at a Monkees 20th Anniversary convention in Philadelphia in 1986, when her proud Dad lifted her up to show all the fans in the audience.

In my view, Manchester seemed to be the best venue. Maybe because Davy was back in his hometown surrounded by all his family and friends, I was delighted that he performed "Manchester Boy" that evening, I'm sure it came right from his heart when he sang it. Sadly the press weren't too kind, but we all have come to expect these things, so the audience figures were poor, between 1700 in Glasgow to around 5000 in Manchester. I for one enjoyed each and every show.

Still I only hope we will see BOTH Davy and Micky back in the UK again soon, maybe next time as part of the 60's shows tour to generate more interest and promotion. Peter Noone tours with his Solid Silver 60's shows and can tour the UK for 10 weeks, so how about Peter Noone, with Davy and Micky, Gary Puckett, and The Turtles, a great idea? What do you think? Keep on Monkeeing around!

On a last note, while waiting outside of Wembley Arena, I saw the pillar where the gates are, where the bands leave from, with signatures of other bands on the concrete pillar. So I picked up my pen and wrote MONKEES 4 EVER David Jones (a great tribute don't you think!)
